My engine suffered the cam follower failure 2 summers ago, so to be proactive, I I just had the cam follower replaced again yesterday. After the ordeal, i did't want to go through it again. So about 34,000 miles later, I had a new follower put in. When I got the old one back, it had a little wear. There were scratches on the outer edges, and the black teflon coating was gone in the middle. $197 every few years to replace it is a cheap price to pay to avoid another failure.
