Smile Door Lock Module - 2009 A4 Avant

I have had to replace two door lock modules. The first one on the right rear and the second was the driver door. An independent charged me $400 for the right rear, so when the second gave out, I decided to do it myself. The module cost was $200 so I figure I saved $200+.

Symptoms were the subject door would not lock with the key fob. Sometimes would lock with the interior switch and would always lock with the key in the door.

There are good posts around that show you how to remove the interior panel. In order to remove the module, you have to remove the door handle and in the case of the driver's door, the lock cylinder. Good posts around that describe how to do that. The trick to reinstall was a challenge, so I post my method here.

The door handle will not fully actuate the lock release (only pulls out part way). This was because of an interference of the cable cam with the lock cylinder "keeper". The lock cyl is held in place by a screw (door jamb panel on the door). If this is not moved towards the rear of the car then you will not be able to insert the rear of the handle into the "latch" that connects the handle to the door lock release mechanism. Sliding this rearward made clearance or the cable cam to rotate far enough to engage the handle. Then slide it back to the front and install the lock cylinder then tighten the screw to hold it in place.

I also experienced a poor electrical connection on the harness from the door panel to the door controller. Had to plug and unplug several times to get power back. Works perfectly now.

Default Another Door Lock Module Failure

I have now experienced the third door lock module failure. This time the front passenger door. I guess when the other two fail I can rest easy that that will be the end of it, HA! What a piece of crap. Three out five DL modules fail within 18 months or each other. Sounds like a patter to me.
