Default Gear selector

Hi, I have a 2.0 TDI sline avant, my problem is the gear stick has gone all floppy and makes selecting 3rd and 4th a bit tricky. All the gears select without crunching. I have looked under the center console and all looks ok here as nothing is missing or broken. Could my problem be the ball joint on the end of the selector arm?? Really grateful for some advice on this before I get under the car, Audi want £60 just to take a look.
Thanks

There is nothing worse than a floppy stick. I'm surprised your wife has not complained.

Not sure about the Audi, but my Crossfire (SLK320 drivetrain) suddenly had problems shifting into gear and turned out to be the shifter cable had loosened. I am no an DIYer and the local shop fixed it quickly and inexpensively.

LOL Im still floppy, but think my problem is the detent in the transmission/gearbox that locates the selector central for 3rd and 4th but don't know how to remedy unless I remove the transmission from the car, which I don't want to do unless Ive got to change the clutch at a later date. The gears select ok , just a little tricky when selecting 3 + 4 quickly.
Thanks
