1979 Audi Fox Question
I've just acquired an Audi Fox from 1979 and I'm quite happy. I intend to restore it and give it new life. There are a few things wrong with it so im planning on fixing those right away. Now i had a question about the engine. Im going to have to replace it because amazingly enough, the original engine is still in it and runs, but since it does have 300,000 miles on it, I'm amazed it still works at all. Now I was wondering what engines are really compatible with it, because it is the original Fuel Injection type. I would really like to place a fairly new engine (year 2000 up) but i didnt know if that would be possible. I know it's related to the A4 and passats and golfs, but i didnt know if recent engines would fit or work in the Fox. Any help would be great
The engine bay is small so that rules out most of your late model motors. The original should be either a 1.7L or a 1.6L and similar to if not the same as the ones used in the older VW Rabbit and the later Golf. Theoretically you should be able to stuff a 2.0L, however I think the later came with cross flow heads and EFI. If you are looking to surprise someone at red light or to have some fun then go for the swap otherwise just rebuild the original and save your money. Last time I looked around the Fox is not exactly a collector’s item.
I have a 1975 audi fox and are in the process of fitting a 1990 3A 2l fuel injected engine to my fox. The motor fit and bolts up to the standard audi fox gear box with no clearance problems. hope this helps
