Default 87 coupe

Storie: For the last few months I've driven past an old audi coupe. It looked rather sad, but still in relatively good condition. It has sat in the same spot for as long as I have known. ive always been interested, but never had the initiative to go to the house and ask about it. So today i drive by again, and I notice there are some people outside. So I get the courage, and stop by and talk to them. not knowin much about the car, i ask the general questions. what year, does it run, and thats about it. ( i do not know much about these cars) He said it was an 87 and it needs a new headgasket, but the motor has been used pretty well, so it most likely would need to be totally rebuilt.

SO my question is. what should i find out about the car? what should i look for? is this car awd, or fwd? how hard is it to replace a headgasket? how hard/expensive is it to rebuild these motors?

I appologize for my lack of knowledge. i have been searching on google for a little bit, but i thought i could come straight from the source of the owners.

OH and if requested, i could stop by and take some pics.

THANK YOU.

A head gasket is pretty straight forward and not that expensive. The coupe is a fwd and was rated as one of the best Audi's ever built for reliablity. I had an 87 Coupe GT with over 434xxxkm on it(odometer died) and ill the maintanence i did was timing belt and water pump for good measure. These cars are fun and easy to work on. The only problem i ever encountered was aftermarket goodies were a pain to come by and when you found them you payed from the nose. For a few hundred bucks id get it! let me know if you need to know anything else and get some pics up!

try to start it see what happens ... a blowh head gasket ain't gonna hurt nothin' adn if you hear nocking comeing fom the engine (top, valves) then hydraulic valve lifter are not hard to replace ... th lifter chater could lead some peple think that a whle rebuild is needed
