Default 96 Cabriolet convertible top fluid type?

Does anyone know the type of fluid this is? Are there equivalent fluids in the aftermarket? Where? Thanks

The convertible top uses the same fluid as the power steering. It is a mineral oil based fluid. Part number G 002 000. It is cheaper at the VW dealer by about $5.00 and expect to pay about $30.00 for it. There may be an aftermarket equivalent, but I would stick with the correct stuff. That said, don't buy it untill you have looked at the reservoir which is in the right rear fender, accessable only through the trunk, and connected to the conv top hydraulic assembly. Expect to remove most of the trunk lining to see it, or be a contortionist with mirrors. If your top is not working, it's not usually low fluid and if it is, you have a leak that needs fixed first. If it is low, you will have to be creative to get the fluid in without having to remove the Conv Top Hyd Assembly to do it. Typically though, it is the wiring that goes through the trunk hinges that breaks internally and causes the top to stop functioning. Since you have a '96 there is a OBD (On Board Diagnostic) connector underneath the rear ashtray that allow for diagnosis of the top system. Get somebody to scan it. Let us know more about when in the sequence it stops working.

Default 1994 cabriolet

the top wont go all the way back. it stops in mid way point after the rear lid opens partially. What could be the cause of this.
