I have to put a new engine into an 1984 Audi 4000 quattro that I recently acquired. I was wondering what other engines if any will swap fairly neatly into the engine bay? If anyone knows, please let me know.

 

5 cyl 2.3, 10v 5cyl turbo, 20v 5cyl turbo

 

basically put on anything from a 92-95 s4.basically the same engine only with a k-k-k turbo that can be chipped to 400+ HP.

 

I hear that the 5-cyl 2.22 10v turbo has been done many times. You should have no problems locating a 5000 turbo or 89-90 200 turbo for peanuts. If you do find a donor car keep in mind that the ECU might be different if it is equipped with a 4-sp automatic. The older 3-sp blenders were not electronically controlled so you might be able get away with using one. Get a whole donor car if you got the room you will be glad that you did! Good luck!

I see this thread is really old, but it's the top hit on a google search for Audi 4000 motor swap, so can anyone tell me more about swaps they have done that produce 300+ horsepower? I have never done a motor swap myself but am interested in planning one for a 87 4000 CS quattro I bought recently. The difficulty level of the swap would be a huge factor for me, and rewiring stuff is scary to me, so with those factors in mind I am looking for feasible suggestions for my novice skill level. Thanks a lot
