Default Audi coupe 2.2e

Hi folks,

Brought myself a 89' 2.2e coupe today Well chuffed with it! Got a few tech questions if anyone can help please?

Driving home (from Eastbourne to Oxford) I noticed I can smell petrol from inside the car!! A bit worrying! I have traced it to the boot and it seems to be coming from the side where the filler is? any none problems?

also there is a winning noise which I thought was the gearbox but I think it might be power steering pump! again is there any none problems with this??

I brought the car on Ebay fairly cheep and after 5 miles thought I'd been done!! Stopped at the lights and there was loads of smoke coming out the bonnet and a big smell of oil! My heart sunk!! When I looked i could see that someone had toped up with oil and spilt it all over the inlet manifold and exhaust!! 120 miles of smelling burnt oil and petrol!! I wonder why I've got a headache!!

Thanks in advance,

Chad

the stering pump, mine does not make a whining noise untill 1600RPM. then till 1800 and no more.
my stering rack is leaking more that top secret information from FBI. well mostly the same.
I simply add some more regular ATF universal fluid by castrol and it keeps going.
same for FBI.

it is posible to have a hole in the tank, or leaking tube. car is old.

If they oferfiled the oil meaning it is leaking. Keep a look at it. If they were handless and dumn, tyhey simply spiled it.

Make sure you have adiquite presure. HYDRALICK LIFTER cannot go on without presure. They will break.

And if posible Record the whine, or at least explain in more detail.

Like mine. When starting from a start. At low speed in first gear (auto) there is a whine between gears, making a small whiii sound. As soon as it jumps up a gear it desipears.

Thanks people,
Found out the cause of the fuel smell! Someone had put the vent breather non-return valve on the wrong way causing the tank to get access pressure and pass by from one of the breather pipes from the tank!

Definitely no oil leak anywhere, doesn't seem to be burning any either (even bouncing off the rev limiter!) just doesn't no how to fill the oil up!! Oil pressure is 2 bar at warm tick over and 5 bar when running. No problems there.

Don't think its steering pump now! more gearbox (its a manual). The noise sounds like a whirling!! hard to describe. Doesn't do it when under load. only makes the whirling noise when slowing down with no throttle. Reminds me of the old ford escorts when put in reverse!!

Thanks again,
Chad

Hey I have an 89 Audi coupe too Cool cars... but need a lot of care for them to keep going. I had a whirr noise too.. take a look at the heat shield that goes over the drive shaft.. I know on mine it was bent a bit, causing it to rub on the u joints and drive shaft. Could be comming from one of the wheels?? I have to check that on mine myself.. i get little rocks stuck up in there from time to time.

hmm, I know of these whining.
its probably the final drive, the reverse gears are worn or damaged.
shall I explain???

EDIT: Oh check the oil maybe change it. use syntetic like redline or royal purple or Mobil1 75w-90.
if you change first check if the fill hole can be opened, then and only then check if you can open the drain hole!!!
