Hate to say this, but I am starting to miss my civic. I feel like I can't go fast in my car because I'm pushing 3000rpm and only going 90km/h.
What is the normal rpm rate to upshift in these older audis? Is there something wrong with my trans? What rpm should I be driving at without having to shift gears?

in my car when I want to accelerate faster I switch into 3rd and its normal to pass 3000 rpm at 90km/h. does your TC locks up when the tranny switchis into final gear?

I had an '84 4000S w/auto and I know what you mean. The 4000S is equipped with a sucky plain-Jane 3 speed automatic. It has no torque converter lock-up. The 3-sp automatic was never meant for performance driving for that you had to go with a 5-speed. Audi used the same crapy trans from 80-87 with the exception of 83-84 which used a different final drive that at 3000 rpm gave you 60mph versus the 55mph.
