I have a 1984 4000 Quattro, that I need to tow roughly 700 miles. My 4000 has the 5 speed manual transmission.

Can I tow this car with all 4 wheels on the ground without damaging anything in the drive line?

Do I have to disconnect or remove the rear drive shaft, in order to tow it?

Do I HAVE to use a dolly or trailer?

If you take the drive shaft out. You can just put the car on a dolly up front and tow. otherwise, just truck towing, when you put a car on top of a bed and tow.

 

The only way I would tow a Quattro is on a flat bed - all wheels off the ground. In don't know about removing the drive shaft.

 

ya i agree never ever do anything but a flat bed with an audi strange things happen other wise i really dont know why i think they just get offended that there not carried to the car hospitol

 

Even if you were to disconnect the rear drive shaft? I don't know how difficult that is, I'm sure it's no picnic, but that should render the rear wheels completely disconnected from the rest of the drive train. Why would that not be ok for typical towing?

 

it might be ok but rolling with the drive shaft disabled like that could lead to other problems. just use a flat bed or you will be sorry.

 

Thanks for the info. Looks like a car trailer/flat bed is the only way. I was afraid of that.

 

Use a flat bed that's what i did when my 5000s quattro needed to be towed.

 

Some vehicles have a problem with lubrication of the gears in the rear end/transfer case if they are towed -even with the drive shaft removed...

 

I'm not sure what I am going to do with the car now. My choices are rent a U-Haul and a Car Trailer, or just scrap it. I'm looking at 75 cents a mile for 1400 miles, plus fuel, plus $80 a day for the truck and trailer.
