99 a4 1.8t bad gas or fuel filter?
Hi all! Here is my problem. I have the 99.5 a4 1.8t quattro. It ran great until I filled the tank last week. Pulling out of the gas station it bogged really hard, rpm dropped to like 400 or so and I had to ease the gas pedal for 2 miles before it would get above 30 mph. Then it was fine for 8 miles or so. At a stoplight it did the same thing. Bucking and wanting to stall so had to ease the pedal to get it going and eventually would get up to speed. The next day it was fine. A few more times this has happened, same scenario. Then last night while driving back from my wife's work the car basically wouldn't go past 15 or 20 mph. The audi mechanic I got the car from tells me probably the fuel filter is clogged but he is a good hour drive on the highway. I don't think I can get her to go 65 mph at all plus I don't want to risk the drive in case it is a major problem. The local mechanic wants 400 dollars to change the filter which is 4 times the amount the tech that sold me the car said he would charge me. So question is, what would you do? I am very much torn on having the car towed to the tech, or biting the bullet and having the local garage do it. Then what if it is not the filter I would have wasted a few hundred on nothing. My wife and I are on a very tight budget and this being our only car we need to get it back to running. Thanks for your thoughts.
