Default a4 multitronic fuel consumption

I have recently bought a 2004 A4 1.9tdi (130) sport with a multitronic gearbox and have been very disappointed with teh fuel consumption which averages only 37 mpg despite having a high extra urban component. Even when I really 'nurse' it I can only average 40. I expected 45+ given that friends get 50 mpg out of their manual equivalents.

Does anyone have a similar experience and is there anything I can do?

its a heavy car for the engine and depends on how hard your lead foot is, do a service oil-oil filter filter, fuel filter
