Default Fuel Sender Leaking

Hi all,

I have a 2000 A6 2.5 diesel estate. I drove into work today as normal, got a call from security at lunchtime saying there was diesel leaking. I went out and as far as I could see it was dripping, slow but regular, but I couldn't see where from, only that it seemed to be the top of the tank (didn't fancy getting under the car in a work skirt) Got a garage to collect it, when they parked it up there it had stopped. They looked it over and they said it's the fuel sender unit which needs replacing at a cost of £225 + VAT + labour :0 They also said that this may go wrong on a 12 year old petrol tank and this could mean a new tank (for that I really do dread to think!)

I've been looking on the internet and this does seem feasible. I will get a garage to do it but has anyone else had this work done, and how did your tank hold out? I guess after 11 years in Scotland it's a bit rusty! Is this price going to be for sender until only, it seems very high? Would it need the pump too if it's only the sender leaking? Also been looking about on the Internet for people who can offer a better price, is there anyone in the UK that you can recommend? Been looking on Ebay but I'm not too sure what I am looking at yet, there seems a lot of different senders for the A6, I am off to do some more homework on that. Can't get under the car at home as we still have lots of snow (which is maybe what killed it).

225 seems a little high for just a fuel sender but i have no way of looking up that vehicle.

to compare - same vehicle but with a 2.8l gas engine out here would be less than $60 for the part and maybe 2hrs in labor.
