Default Is My ECU Flashable

I have a 1998 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro 5 speed AEB and my ECU code is 8DO907557N.....I was at the GIAC tent and got all set up at SoCalEuro here in SD this weekend...they modified a plug and then ran it....They told me my ECU was not able to be done.....I needed to get a P code ECU...I was wondering if this is right?

Model Year 2000 was the first to be able to be "flashed." Before that, they have to be "chipped" (as in, actually have a chip soldered on the ECU).

I was thinking that was the case.....so would chipin' the ECU be better than a flash?

It's essentially the same thing. My 557 P had to be chipped, not flashed.

It is very possible that your old ECU was chipped by a previous owner. Now that you have a new ECU, you no longer have the chip. But the difference is huge. You wouldn't just think it's slower, you would know beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Yeah it was chipped...I took it apart and looked at it. I have pictures too but want to find out what all I can do now. I know the GIAC loader works just have not messed with it much at all.

Your welcome......I know that I looked up how the flash loader works and well come to find out....it is not GAIC at all. I have no clue who made this chip but it is good. I do have a P code box still and going to have it flashed when I have some more money and maybe fix up the motor more going to start replacing hoses
