Default New Fuel Pump at 60k

I'm the original owner or a 2004 A4. With out warning my fuel pump went and I just had a new one installed.

Are there signs that say you need a new one and is it common to need a new fuel pump at 60k?

just install new fuel pump at 60k for my audi too..I guess it is Audi problem, anyway, I keep the old fuel pump until Audi has 2004 recall, now Audi is doing recall for 2003 cars.
