Which octane to use?

Which octane to use?
Greetings all!
Just bought a new 2004 A-6, 2.7T,S-line. The manual calls for premium gas. I've had three other Audis and the dealer (2 different ones) told me it was OK to use mid grade (89 octane). Did so for many years with no problems.
Suggestions for the new car?
Thanks mujch.

RE: Which octane to use?
Gents: Thanks for the info. As luck would have it the local Enmark station has a discount of 7 cents on premium on Tuesdays. Since I will fill up only once a week most times that will work out very well.
No problem.

Your engine will run fine with 89 octane. If your engine doenst "like it" thats because of something else. I run 89 in mine and it doesnt knock, my uncle has an 01 and he runs 89 with no knocking. Anything higher will only give you slightly better performance, better gas mileage, and wont freeze in your fuel lines. If your gas guage says "premium unleaded only" then you should do that. If you are chipped, you definately need 91+.

You get less performance with lower than specified octane because the knock sensors sense pre-detonation and in response the ECU retards the spark timing. This leads to poorer acceleration and power loss.
