1998 A6 Q 2.8

No start, hard start, if it did start no power.

While checking the fuel pump I found that it goes on sometimes. It never goes on when you go to accessories only. It sometimes turns on when the key goes to the start position. It sometimes stays on when the key is turned from the start position to accessories. When the pump does stay on in the accessories position it turns off after about 5 sec.(the car has not started)

It has a 4 pin electrical connector, 2 of the pins have about 5 v in the accessories position. The remaining 2 pins have continuity. In the Start position one of the pins with 5 v goes to 12v.

Put everything back together and even with the fuel pump spinning as I try to start the car it doesn't send gas through the fuel line.

 

sounds to me like ignition switch problem, open it up and inspect it - could be burned inside.
