Relatively new to these forums and I was just wondering if anyone could give the basics of what an Audi service maintenance requires. I have a 2009 a4 quattro with 72000 miles and the service light just came on. What is required to service when the light comes on and would it be cheaper to go to the dealer or a private mechanic.

Late reply here but.... Unless its already been done I would think the service light is likely for the timing belt service. If thats what it is there a few things you should know.
1. It is an essential service item! not doing it could result in catastrophic engine damage.
2. It will be fairly expensive no matter who does it.
3. You need it done by someone who will not "short cut" the job.
Look in the A4 section of these forums and I would also look up " timing belt/ water pump service" on the web to fully inform yourself on this. I am new to Audi but from what I know this is the most critical service item for these cars.
