Default A6 Indicator Fault. Please Help

Ok, so all help & suggestions much appreciated. Here's the problem, whilst driving along, without any notice or previous fault the indicators came on. By on I mean solid on, no flashing & on even with ignition off. Both green arrows on dash lit up as well as hazard warning button.

Inital suggestions were the hazard switch, which I know contains lots of flasher relays etc. A brand new genuine item later and nothing has changed. Unplug hazard switch and all on, unplug switch & all off.

I have removed the hazard fuse and they go off & the indicators work, but flash very fast and not always at a constant pace. It looked like holding the hazard button in would result in the indicators flashing at a normal pace, but this now doesn't appear to always be the case.

A very confusing issue. Having tried a new hazard switch i'm not sure what to try next.

Ideas?

PS car is a 2003 A6 TDi Avant, tow bar fitted using genuine Audi loom.
