Ignition system electrical issue (new ignition switch) (2002 A6, C5, AVK)
Quick Backstory
I own a 2002 A6 (C5) with the AVK engine. A week ago I went to a charity car wash and some local members of the military wash my car. When getting back into it, the car wouldn't start; however, the electronics were all on even when I removed the key. After fiddling with it there without any of my tools, I decided to just have the car towed back to the house to work on.
Diagnostics/Repair Attempts
After running an auto-scan on the car, I found the following code that I think is the culprit:
I checked out the 00849 Code page on the Ross-Tech Wiki as well as these forums and everything that I read about this code mentioned to replace the ignition switch. With as cheap as it was, I went ahead and did that. That page refers only to the "Unknown Switch Condition" error however, and I've got an "Open or Short to Ground" instead. I figured some water from the car wash was just causing an issue so I tried to clean/dry up the area around the starter to see if that was it to no avail.
While I can twist wrenches, my electronics/electrical skills leave a lot to be desired. What I've done so far is checked the resistance at the ignition switch harness for the recepticle that mates with Terminal 50 of the ignition switch (after reading another post on this forum that mentioned this) and read ~70Ω resistance which I further believe is indicative of the open/short. When the ignition switch is connected, the instrucment cluster lights up completely, but when putting the key into the ignition the spring in the ignition switch doesn't do anything. I think that the "S-contact"/"Terminal S" refers to the switch in some way, but I'm not sure exactly what it means.
At the bottom of this post, I've added my most recent (truncated) VCDS scan after I cleared the codes as well as the advanced measuring blocks for the Immobilizer because I thought at first that it might have been an issue; on a previous scan I didn't have the key in the ignition and the battery voltage was low which was causing the Immobilizer light on the dash to blink, but with a charged battery and the key in the ignition it went away. The codes for the airbag and steering wheel are just because I still have all of that disconnected.
Would someone be able to help me with what I should be doing to track down where the issue is. As I said before, I am fairly inept with using my multimeter, so explicit instructions when it comes to where/what to test would be great! I've got access to my digital Bentley Manual with all of the wiring diagrams and I have my VCDS so I can retrieve any additional information from there as well if it would be helpful. Thanks a ton!
