I hear Valitine is the best out right now. As far as otehr brand I am not quite sure... You can probaly make a special mounting device youself.

Well, they need to have a clear veiw of the windshield to work well. I'm sure you could hook up a custom setup that would hide the detector. Valentine is really good from my experience, I would recommend it over the 'Passport' or any other top detectors.

The other problem with the windsheild mount (although you can take it out of the carrier) is that they are a target for theft.

I'm a current BMW driver (potential soon to be S4 driver, fingers crossed) and have had my Valentine for about 2 years. ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. The number of times it's saved me from tickets it's already paid for itself several times. A friend of mine bought a used Boxter and it actually had the little power port (an RJ-45 connection) already installed near his rearview mirror from the previous owner. Of course, he already had his Valentine too, so that worked out great.

They are pricey, but worth it in my opinion. And Cameron is right -- view of rear window is essential and you might want to take it off your window and on the floorboard or in your glovebox when you're out shopping...
