Default Removing factory decals

Is it possible without damaging the paint, I'm worried because my a4 is a 1996, my intuition tells me that the age might be a factor in taking them off smooth.

If you are talking about the Audi emblems and badges, I'm pretty sure that most cars have pegs on the back of the emblems. Therefore, if you take off the emblems or badges, there will probably be holes on your trunk. I'm not 100% sure with this though. You should contact travis628 (I think is his username here) because I noticed he painted his emblem and could probably tell you if there are pegs on the emblems. His is a B7, though...

As far as damaging the paint, probably not - but there will be a dark spot where the badge used to be since it is a little older.

If you are interested in having your badges painted, I can do that for you.

I have a 2007 A3 and I easily removed my badges with dental floss. I kind doubt that your car has pegs holding your badges on. The only problem that you would run into would be the darker paint under the badges. Hope that helps.
