Default 1.8t sludge problems

Hi all,

I just recently purchased a 98 A4 1.8t quattro with 75,000 miles...all the required maintainence had been performed by Audi and the timeing belt had been changed.

Two weeks in my oil pressure light began going on and off. I contacted the local dealer and took the car in. The diagnosis was the sludge problem. It had also damaged the Turbo, which needed to be replaced/rebuilt. Thankfully, the previous owner had everything done at Audi right on Schedule and the entire repair was covered under the extended warranty that Audi issued this past summer.

So...word to the wise...Do the scheduled engine maintainance when it is required!!! And if considering buying an A4 1.8t....make sure the previous owner has PERFECT records.

They did also say the water pump would need to be replaced soon...not under warranty, but expected. Dealer is going to charge $700 plus....Anyone do this job themselves?

The water pump should have been done with the timing belt. This saves on labor.
