Default 2000 A6 quattro timing chain/oil leak

Greeting,
I'm new to Audi's.I've been informed by my local import mech.I've developed a oil leak due to timing "chain"
I said I'm approaching service requiring timing belt replacement. He tells me there 2 different things.
I've got 75,000 miles.Whats the deal?He gave me a $1200. estimate.
Thanks 4 any help.

Audis have a timing belt, and good idea to change it at 75k miles. Your mechanic may be referring to the overhead camshafts, driven be a chain. And the cam tensioner seals are probably leaking, price sounds a little high.
What year/ model ?

clearly he didnt look at the post title.. we know its an A6 2000. what engine is what matters. vin code would be helpful for pricing, what exactly was on the quote? water pump? belt or chain?

I spoke to mech. today and your right its a cam shaft chain.I have 2.8 engine. He said it's a10 hr job.
Is thissomething I should be concerned about. Can this be put off?
I'm not crazy about putting lot's of$ into a 8 yr.old car.
I appreciate the imput.

if its a chain that sounds about right.. whats your engine code? should stampped on a flat spot on the head, 3 letters. if you want an exact time it should take ill need a vin. it all depends on how bad the leak is, and why its leaking.. you dont want a cam adjuster not getting oil or something else serious.

My bad, you're right, it's in his subject line " 2000 A6 quattro...". The price to change the cam tensioner seals should be the same for either engine. As per Bentley, 1998-2000 > AHA , and 2000-2004 > ATQ engine, so he could have either one. It's definitely labour intensive.

Thanks KSochalski,
WVWFA71F07V002718
Est. was $1200. BTW the leak has gone from a few small drops to losing 1 qt. in 1 week of normal driving.
Alsowould it save me in the long run to have timing beltchanged while work is being done?
Thanks for your imput.

you said it was an A6 with a 2.8 that VIN is for a 2.0 VW. maybe you should check that number agian.. or you have some serious fraud issues.
