Default 2004 TT Roadster 89,000 miles timing belt???

Car just died. No noise, no issues. Came to a stop light and it just died. Had it towed to the dealership. A day later, I get the call ... Timing belt went and now requires $6600 in repairs ($3800 parts and tax, remainder labor @ 20 hours).

Sound right?

What are my options?

Can this repair be done cheaper as a DIY or a repair shop? Are there places familiar with Audi's that are reputable?

Live in Michigan ...

Thanks,
Cynthia

PS ~ She is my little Blue Bomber and I cannot let her go yet.

Hi. Timing belt failure usually means expensive engine damage.
Is there any history of the belt being replaced previously? If so, maybe you can claim against Audi for premature failure and subsequent engine damage. If not an independent Audi dealer would repair it for a lot less. I'm in the u.k so can't help with that. Also, if it has main dealer service history, question why you weren't advised to have it replaced.

Thanks for the reply.

No evidence of it being replaced. They mentioned that it should be done around 100k miles as normal maintenance. How do I find an independent Audi dealer?

I purchased it used in 2010. I would think the dealership would be responsible for making sure any recall notices were resolved before passing it on to unsuspecting customer. Since then, I have had to replace the display, which was a recall, but the dealership said only a few light bulbs were burned out ... and now this, which is a recall in 2002-2003. Yes, I realize it was buyer beware, but shame on them.

I am just sickened by the whole thing. I love my Audi, but it seems that the powers-to-be at Audi have decided the 2004 did not have the same issues as the 2002-2003 model years. I hate the thought of not being able to get her back on the road, especially since I still owe $7,000 on her and now this at $6600. Is she really worth $13k without repairing the drivers heated seat?

Hi Cynthia.
I used to work for a main dealer in the u.k. Get the dealership to give you an exact mileage for when the timing belt should be replaced by (here in the u.k Audi advised 75k or 5 years for your model). Around 100k isn't specific enough. I think this would be important to at least get some goodwill from Audi to contribute towards the repair. If it failed before the recommended mileage, you should have a case.
Speak to Audi customer care directly as sometimes they can over-rule the dealerships.
It's a shame your looking at such a huge bill for a car you love, good luck.
