Default A4 2004 1.8T Code P0012

Hey guys.

Ok so i have had a nightmare with my 04 1.8T A4, i took the car in to have the emissions done for my tags and it failed for the engine chek light not working and the following codes.

P0012

P0420: Cat or O2 sensor are my thoughts.

Now the P0012 seems to point towards the cam chain tensioner.

I want to have this replaced my self so after any top tips or a how to guide, or is this something i really should not attempt i.e any special tools required?

Also i looked on ebay and seems i can get the required parts including new timing chain alot cheaper than OEM.

Should i steer well away from these, can someone recommend where to get one from that they know what end up with me having to do a top end rebuild.

Thanks in advance time is really against me as i have to get my tags by the 29th of December.

Just to add, my engine check light is now working after i removed the black tape from the light assy that the previous owner did to mask the problem!!!!

Here is a DIY on replacing it if it is bad. It's for a passat but the procedure is essentially the same Camtensioner Replacement
