My 98 A4Q has a rattling 1st gear. My tech tells me not to even try having it repaired; I'm better off putting in a used transmission. I don't dispute his logic, but I'm wondering if a fluid change might quiet down the rattle (sounds like a growl) and prolong the tranny life a little. Has anyone heard of this problem? What gear oil would you recommend?

I doubt a fluid change would help. Usually a growl is caused by a chipped tooth or other mechanical failure in the gearset.
