Default Catyltic converters needed?

My 1998 Audi A6 is at the shop getting the timing belt done, new water pump, plugs/plug wires, etc.. and the mechainc found that one of the Catylitic converters is messed up. Can he remove them and it still run fine? I know the CEL will probably come on but i dont mind that. I just would rather not have to purchase new cats on top of what its costing me to do all the other work. I can always buy them later when its time for emissions. Any help/input will be apprecitated, thanks.

it's up to you if you want to take it out, you don't have to get a $600.00 cat, you can go to any muffler shop a get a universal cat for a $150.00, i would replace it but it is your car.

I am almost positive that the shop will not remove the catalitic converters for you. It is against the emissions standards, although, you could do it yourself, or take it to a local muffler shop and tell them to install test pipes in their place.
