clutch problems vs. pressure plate problems
i believe either my clutch or my pressure plate (or both) are not working right.
so i'm curious if it is possible to determine which is malfunctioning.
i'm getting a bit sluggish acceleration. i notice it mostly in 1st and 2nd gears. when i first got my car, the spedometer and tac would rise at approximately the same rate. now the tac will go up at the normal rate, but the sped. will rise at slower rate (meaning the car accelerates at a slower rate).
anyway, i tried searching for both 'pressure plate' and 'clutch problems', but i didn't really find too much. so i would appreciate some help if anyone is knowledgeable... greatly appreciated.

Is this your first manual tranny?
You should be able to tell if the clutch is slipping, and if it is your firat manual tranny, understandable if it is slipping. Most newbie manual drivers slip the clutch way too much, wear out the disc, burn the pressure plate, get hard-hot spots, glazing.
Best bet is replace them both, else you WILL have to have the pressure plate resufaced, as well as the flywheel. And, if you have the pressure plate cut, you just lost some of the pressure from it, as the springs will have to decompress that much further to apply pressure, which would, naturally, be less than a new one.
Learn to drive the thing. You'll love it. I don't anymore. Autos for me, from now on, but many years of manuals, including the truck I drive now, when not in the Audi automatic.
