Default Code help

I apologize if I'm in the wrong section. New forum member. Just picked up a 98 A4 wagon, but 30 miles later, it tossed a code. No driveability issues.

Advance Auto says the code is just 1137, a dealer code. I had expected a Pxxxxx,

Any direction appreciated.

That has a list of all the codes that your car will throw.

Thanks. I had seen that Bentley list on a Google search but thought this was one of dem special dealer codes. The guy was using an Actron scanner, so I guess he meant his unit didn't have an english description. Usually, they give me a code and tell me what it means. Maybe I'll get it scanned at a second place.

I will try cleaning the MAF and maybe a bottle of techron and see what happens. 147K miles on this car.

Hmm, maybe it's time to get a scan tool. Is there such a thing as a useful and inexpensive scan tool (hunnert bucks) for the Audi? Or are those two qualities mutually exclusive?

VAG COM software that downloades to your lap top is just as good as the dealers $5,000 scan tool the VAS 5052. The software is free, you just have to buy the cable to communicate from www.ross-tech.com. Download the software and buy the cable for about $250. The cheap actron scanner is about $100, i have one of those too so i can diagnose other cars (non VW) but its just a code reader. The vag com can do just about anything.

Thumbs up

Thanks, Crazyhawk for the tips,

I talked to the original owner, a good friend, over the weekend and looked at the maintenance records he gave me. He had it in twice over the past year for the CEL. Looks like the shops went off on tangents.

-Found suction jet pump clogged and cracked hoses. Replaced. $461
-Fuel Injection Service. Hope this was more than hooking up a bottle of Techon $202

The CEL came back on in both cases but after the 2nd visit, he let it go and it went off eventually and stayed off for 8 months til I bought it.

The 1137 seems minor and can wait til I get a chance to pick up an Actron or an Innova to fiddle with it. I also have a Honda and a Chryco, so can't justify a single use scanner.
