Electrical gremlin manifests by shifting into drive
Car: 1998 Audi A6 Quattro Avant 140,000 miles
Issue: The car starts fine and engine runs as it should. The problem is that the little dripping oil can light comes on (although the car has oil as witnessed by the dipstick) and while it continues to run fine in park, reverse, and in neutral, it stops as though the ignition was turned off when put into drive.
I had the car towed to my mechanic, who witnessed the problem backed it into his garage, and proceeded to try to diagnose the problem. Upon exposing the wiring harness under the glove box he scared the gremlin away before he could find the problem i.e. the car started and drove as it should with no dripping oil light. He kept the car for a day or three hoping the gremlin would reappear, but no luck. He returned the car to me and it was fine for another month then the symptoms reappeared - dripping oil can light, engine shuts off when put into drive.
Anyone else had this problem or know what may cause it?
Thanks in advance for any help!
