Clearly my motor is all done. The mechanic who looked at it confirmed "the motor is cooked." I have no desire to have it replaced, and am looking for a new ride, but I still would like to know what on earth happened and if it could have been prevented.

2000 Audi A4 1.8T, 5 spd. manual, 170,000 miles

Oil light came on 3 weeks ago, and went right out. Oil level was fine. Mechanic replaced oil dipstick tube, which was in several pieces, but found nothing else wrong. After a couple days, oil light continued to come on intermittently, but consistently every time I slowed down or stopped. Back to mechanic, who replaced the pressure switch and really thought that would fix it. It didn't, but they checked everything they could think of, and the car felt and sounded perfectly normal to them, and to me after driving it for 4 years. Drove it 100 miles a day for a week, oil light on almost constantly, rarely going out. The day before I planned to bring it to an Audi dealership, I suddenly felt it start to fight me on the gas, pulled over immediately as the engine started roaring and clattering (but not a metallic sound). The tow truck driver said "sounds like a diesel," and it did. It never stalled, and still starts up no problem, though it sounds horrible. Local mechanic (not my usual one) immediately diagnosed it as "cooked". Said it had to be replaced. Obviously wasn't a ploy to get my business, as he said if he were in my shoes, he probably would get a new car.

I'm still in mourning, but would like to hear thoughts as to what may have happened.

my cars pretty noisy too, I hope this is not in my future. I have the same car but 100,000 less miles than you so I'm not sure what it could be for either one of us.

 

Mine went from fine one second (and fine for 4 years) to roaring the next. It wasn't a gradual build, so fingers crossed yours is not anything like my problem...

 

Your oil pickup tube was blocked. So your engine wasnt getting any oil. It could have been prevented by stopping the vehicle when the oil light came on. By the time the motor sounds like crap, it is crap.

 

If the rest of the car is ok,why not replace the engine?

 

you could probably rebuild the engine and go on with it.

 

I'd rather sell it to someone who can and wants to do the work. It's getting up there in miles too and I'm too busy to worry about any more car problems. Just disappointed no one could identify the problem my car was telling me about for 3 weeks, not for lack of trying.
