Default Faulty ABS ECU (Apparently) Help!!

My ABS light came on a little while ago on my a3 1.8T (97) and today i took it to an Audi dealer to be checked on their computer. They told me that the ABS ECU is faulty and this would cost £968.55p to put right. The thing is, the light was off as soon as i drove it away. Does the computer reset anything when this happens? Im now a little sceptical about the problem being the ECU as surely the light wouldnt have turned off, would it? One more thing if it is the ECU, does anyone know the part number and cost of the unit?
Cheers guys

if the light goes off then there is no problem, ABS resets its self when the problem is sorted no code reader needed (it either works or it doesn't) sounds like they are trying to stiff you I also think the ECU is ok
