Gas Mileage loss
I have a 01 A4 1.8T Q with 137k miles. I drive a lot for work. My gas mileage has gone from 26 MPG average city and highway to 22 MPG average city and highway over the past year. Is that normal? Other than routine service changes (oil, filters, water pump, timing belt, etc) is there something I should be looking at to boost my mileage back up? I use only 93 octane fuel. Any thoughts would help.

i'm no expert, but if your tires are flat that will decrease M.P.G. also your driving style will affect that, so maybe that has changed over a year.

What SamJ means is that your tire pressure can affect your mileage by as much as a 1/2 gallon a tankfull if you're low by only 4psi. What he din't mention is that you can "recover" as much as another 1/2 gallon/per, or so, if you clean out your trunk. People tend to accumulate stuff back there, and there it stays. Do you drive with your windows down? While it's a good idea during low-speed driving, in teh summer, once you get above 50-60 miles an hour, parasitic drag can drain another 1/10th-1/5th gallon per tankful. The increased coeficient of drag will also rob you of cruising power and acceleration, to a smaller degree. Drive a stick? Bogging down in higher gears, or winding it ALL THE WAY out in lower ones will kill yer mileage. When the light goes green imaging you have a raw egg between your foot and the loud pedal will make your launches mor eco-friendly, too.

Tires are fairly new with normal pressure. Trunk is fairly empty with the exception of my golf clubs being in the trunk...and no I am not taking those out. Would the fuel filter make a difference?
