Question HELP. slow coolant leak..smells too

Hi,
I have a 2001 A8L that has been in the shop more that me driving it. In the last 2 yrs, I have spent almost 6k in repairs/maintenance. Here is another issue now. I have a slow coolant leak. It only goes down when I drive mostly or if I park it for a while, the coolant tank goes empty. There is also a wierd smell coming from the car. I have not noticed any puddles under the car. Please help. WHat all could it be? I have been topping off with audi coolant and wen I run low, I add water. Any thoughts on radiator sealers? Will it cause more harm than good? Thanks a lot.

it could be a number of things. if youve spend 6k on repairs and services in the last couple of years then it wont hurt you to shell out 75 bucks for a good pressure tester, install it on the radiator reservoir and give us a better location.. better yet put pressure to the system and get a light and a mirror and see what you can find..

Check the bottom of the coolant tank with your hand and feel is there is a leak. It is possible for the coolant to drip and get on the engine and give you that delicious smell... That is an easy fix if coming from the tank.
If not then proceed with the pressure tester as suggested.

Could be many things. But I get a vibe that it may be the water pump. I dont know, I just got a vibe. Also, I have a vibe that you have been getting ripped off where ever you have been going to repair your car. Sounds like a lot of money going down the drain in two years. Of course it all depends on what type of repairs have been done. Its a good idea to get a second and third opinion on any diagnosis. Good Luck. (No, I am not a psychic)
