Default How do I protect my turbos?

I am on my 3rd set of turbos on a 2001 S4 with 54,000 miles.
I am a spirited driver, but I don't track the car.
My nephew suggested an oil cooler.
Any suggestions?

Water injection... Will keep core temperatures down, helping protect your whole engine, and will enable you to have a little more boost. Stops pre-detonation as well. Also, make sure that you let the ******* cool down, otherwise heat soak will completely **** them up. Always drive sedately for the last 5 minutes of a drive to allow the oil to cool the turbo down. Never go for a screaming great hoon, then just turn the engine off. If you are really lazy, and have 100 bucks to waste, buy a turbo timer, but they really are for the clinically lazy. Oil coler would help, but not sure by how much. swirl pots are supposed to cool oil down a fair amount to, but I'm no expert oil wise.

Edited to say, you can actually mix it 50/50 water and either methenol, or ethenol, can't remember which, which can help you octane wise!

Edited further due to some friggin hideous smelling pistakes...

Interesting... Who installs water injection? Is it a cooling device dedicated to the turbos?

Check out 'Aquamist' website. lots of info there...

Aquamist FAQ page

It is a fine water mist sprayed into the inlet. Aquamist is one of the main water injection providers in the UK. Not a gimmick, and lots of high end tuners use it.

if you can heavy weight oil like 20w 50 synthetic, and if your on the 3rd set of turbos with 50k i would get the oil feed lines checked out, there is something wrong. upgrade the diverter valve and get a turbo timer. but oil is the most important thing in a boosted car change it often and use redline or amsoil. imo amsoil better for na redline better for boosted.

Sounds like you need a turbo timer and an oil cooler.

Who is replacing your turbos? If they aren't preoiled when first installed, the bearings are toast from the beginning..

When new turbos are put in, oil should be put in prior to instillation and then the engine should be cranked without starting so that the oil pressure builds and feeds the turbos.

The dealer...
And when I asked them if I should be doing anything differently, they said no... just enjoy your car.
Maybe I'll switch to synthetic oil, and let them cool down longer.
Thanks

the president of APR said that blow off valves, tho not recommended on stock applications, when installed properly and the computer chipped PROPERLY, will prolong the life of your turbos.

after driving you're car hard, like anything that heavily engages the turbo chargers, let it idle for about 2 and a half minutes, this will cool the turbo's down by pumping fresh oil through them. this will keep oil from turning into rocks of sludge in you're turbochargers oil lines, and keep your turbo bearings from overheating, one you shut the car down the oil doesnt circulate. the turbo just cooks the hot oil that is inside of it and breaks it down.
