Default How to run self-diagnostic?

I'm trying to help a friend run a dignostic on his 2004 A4 3.0 Quattro. This morning the car was being driven to work when the check engine light came on and the engine began to run roughly at idle. The engine has 36,000 miles. I suspect a coil pack but need to verify my theory before we move any further.

Is there a self diagnostic I can access on the car that will display a trouble code on the gauge display? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Advanced Auto Parts and similar places will usually scan the codes for free, I dont beleive you can access them without an OBD-II connection

VAG-COM and a laptop is your friend. Search the forum.

If you don't have a laptop a code reader is the next best thing.

Don't think so, .... the VAG-Com program (shareware) version is free to download, and cables are $15-20 on flea-Bay. This will give you lots more info than 5 pushes on brake pedal.... lol
