Knocking sound

I've got a '94 A4 Cabriolet and it's got a ghostly knocking sound, an intermittent clunk or thud that usually coincides with going over a bump. It sounds like a small hammer being knocked quite lightly on the underneath of the car. My local dealership couldn't sort it. Any ideas or similar experiences?

I'd start tests in respect of locating the sound source:
front, left, etc
There aretoo many things that could cause sounds...
