Default Loud Engine Noise On Start Up

Hi Guys,

My problem is very similar to that of cruz's post but I was hoping that someone maybe able to help me out here....This is the situation:

My car is a 2001 1.8tq with 160,000 kms on it and I just had an oil change with amsoil 5w-40 synthetic oil. Ever since the oil change about 400 km's ago everyime I start my engine while cold I get a loud rattle for about 1-2 seconds, sounds almost like a diesel engine at idle. I can shut the car off wait a few mins then restart and it sounds fine. I thought maybe it was lifter noise but when I drive and acclerate there is no noise what so ever. Have any of you encountered this problem or have any ideas on what it may be?

Thanks, JC

Sounds like just the camshaft adjuster building up pressure. Don't worry about it there is actually no fix for it. On later models a detent spring was added to help. This is normal............

Like I say sound is just on start up and not consitant sometimes it happens other starts it doesn't. Sound never happens at idle or under load, juist at start up

Your first responder is right: The tensioner for the cam timing chain is hydraulic and takes a couple seconds to build pressure. Until the chair runs against the chaincase. If you still have doubts leave it overnight at a dealership and they will tell you the same thing. Factory has a release written on it which they'll show you.

Hey guys,

I just found out the old owner was running 10w-30 in the car and I changed that over to 5w-40, do you think running a lil heavier weight of oil is why i never heard that sound before as it only started to happen once i changed my oil?

thanks

you should be running 5W/30 or better, I recommend 0W/30 for the turbo engine or0W/40 Mobil1
