Default Mann Oil Filters

I know Mann oil filters are the preferred filters for the Audi, but it seems the have changed the filter a bit.
Their site states a W930/21 for the 12v V6. Currently in my car is a Mann 940/9 that is much bigger than the 930/21.

The Mahle A6000-50065 is the same dimension as the larger Mann 940/9.
Is the Mahle a good filter? The WIX filters are also the smaller ones.

I have a 96 A6 quattro wagon. 2.8 12v

Wouldn't a larger filter be better?

I use the Mobil1 M1-301 oil filter. and the engine V6 has AAH and AFC the AAH uses smaller filter, while AFC uses bigger filter in diameter.

I thing that AFC is V6 or is it AFH, oh never mind.

The mann filter i have is big like the mobil 1 filter in the pic. I just find it funny that mann has changed the filter to a smaller capacity filter.

I am going to use the mahle unless I can find the larger Mann 940/9

I think it's more important the throughput of the filter, moreso than the size... Along with it's ability to, you know, actually FILTER particles out of the oil...

with all new crap on the market. all the filtrs are the same. the size does matter. If there is more filter then more oil can pass per second = more pressure. Better filtering couse less oil per square centimeter = better filtering. The bypass valve is shot = better filtering. If you put small filter where big is better then filter will bypass a lot, short life.

There is a diference in materials that are used. when you go into a store to buy a filter, they are practically the same price. that means that the producer pays almost the same price per filter to produce. so they made of same crap/material. some might add some extra stuff for an ad but if compared tey are the same.

In conclusion: Becosue filters are made of the same crap, the oil determens how good the filtering is. If for example, the oil is thin, it will pass the filter fast thously filtering very fast at low pressure = best filtering. If oil is thin the bypass valve would be closed almost all the time. Thously The oil should be precisly colibrated for your use.

Example:
I'm using now 5w-30 which has properties of cSt@40C of 62.2 and cSt@100C of 10.6 I'm not satisfied by how much I get presure on hot engine (1.9-1.6Bars @ 90C) but I'm very happy of the presure I get at cold engine and the fact that lifters do not bather me at all (3.5-3Bars @ 0C). so what I want for my next oil change is same cold but higher hot.
by the table on the web from manufacturer, you can find what you want. So next level of hot oil is ~14 [cSt@100C of 14], so I will use the table to get it, 5W-40 from the logic is not satisfing becouse cSt@40C is 102 so it much easier to go with 10W-40 but the 0W-40 has cSt@40C is 80 and Cst@100C is 14.3.

The 0W-40 has low sulfate ash, which is great becouse of the friction and it can work longer couse less metal can be shaved.
so it best for my car.

It depends on your car on how to get the oil right. I based this on information provided from mobil1 oil tech ****.

PS I will add the debate of the conventional and syntetic oils into my to do list and a guide on how to distinguish them one from another. [easy]

kakarot, that is some detailed info. i do not think all filters are equal. mann, wix, mahle seem to be of higher quality.
many of the websites for audi parts note that for my year/engine the large filter is used because it will fit. newer models will not fit the large filter, after 1998

Due to the dimentional length of this Mahle filter, this filter is only applicable to Audi 6 cylinder(AFC/AHA) engines through 1998.

Best price I have found for Mann oil filter W940/25 is on eVWParts.com where they charge $4.95 each. That's what they charge you for Fram at Autozone, etc.

Mann and Mahle filters are both very good brands. I'd check over on the 12 valve forum on Audiworld for their preference of oil filters.

my delema is that the 940/9 has been replaced by Mann with the 930/21 which is half the size of the other model.
will this be ok to use? the mahle is still the same large type filter.
