Default Overheating and Minor Oil Leak

Hey everyone,

I have a 2002 A6 Quattro with a 4.2L V8 with approximately 120k miles. Everything has been gravy until the other day when the low oil light came on. So, I went and got the oil changed immediately (it was due anyhow). The day after getting the oil change done the car began running hot. I was thinking it was likely all coincidental and that it was likely a bad thermostat.

I parked it a few days ago and haven't really messed with anything until I could save up and get the thermostat done. Tonight I pulled in and noticed two spots under the front end, one is far to the front under the fans and radiator, and another further back and somewhat toward the passenger side of the car about mid-engine. I'm unsure what the first spot is, but the second is most assuredly oil. I'm trying to figure out if all of this is related to my overheating issue, or if I should just stay on course and get the thermostat replaced?

I've checked the oil and it's not milky, so I'm hoping it's not a head gasket. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
