Please Help !!!!!!
Dear AudiForum Users,
I have used this site several times and I am amazed how knowledgeable many of you are, but for this problem I could not find a post, so I decided to ask myself. I owned my car for six years, I did many repairs and now that the car has over 130,000 miles I am getting this one problem which keeps occurring. It is a 2001 Audi A6 2.8 Quattro. I live in the northeast so we get some harsh winters and recently we had way too much rain. My car last winter had two rust holes in both my flex pipes. The check engine light came on and I was told that on top of the holes I needed a right pre-cat O2 sensor. I had a mechanic cut out the old ones and welded the new flex pipes back in because I didn’t want to purchase two new catalyc converters as suggested by my Audi dealer. Just two weeks ago I finally replaced my passenger side O2 sensor. The light remained on but turned off after about fifty miles of driving. It stayed off for about 500+ miles of driving (mostly highways). This morning in the rain the check engine light came back on. I took it to my local AutoZone to have the codes read and I got two codes, one of them is P0170 and the other is P1296. Please help.
As far as the history of my car. I replaced my timing belt at 80,000 by the dealer and they also replaced the water pump, thermostat and all the belts. At roughly 100,000 miles I replaced my driver side O2 pre-cat sensor, the light came off immediately after I started my car. At roughly 110,000 my coolant reservoir which is made out of plastic had a slow leak caused by coolant (acid ate through the plastic over the years) and I bought a new one from Audi and replaced that, then at 120,000 I did the flex pipes, the mechanic turned off the light and after four weeks of driving it came back on (I was told to replace the passenger side O2 sensor). I drove the car for few months before I decided to replace the other sensor. At 130,000 I finally replaced the O2 Sensor on passenger side and as mentioned above after 500+ miles it came back on. This is the short history of the car and I need some professional advice. I am mechanically savvy so any advice would be great.
