quattro vs. awd or 4x4

what exactly is the difference between quattro and all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive?

quattro is all wheel drive... its just audi's name for it.

4 wheel drive is selectable. you drive in 2 wheel drive... and when you want 4 wheel drive you select it. its typically not designed for all time driving. just when needed

this has already been discussed, short answer quattro is AWD 4wd used transfer case. quattro has a 50/50 torque split using a torsen center diff cabable of transfering 77% of power to the rear. the audi system is completly mechanical.

its a little more complicated then that, the quattro system puts power to all 4 wheels independently, a 4 wheel drive truck only 2 even in 4wd still only 2 wheels have actual power to them thats why they put lockers in the rear axle. some awd systems are the same way. quattro is true 4wd cause all 4 wheels are driving. take a pickup thorugh a snowy parking lot in 4wd and then take an audi in the same one youll see the difference
