Default Replacing the rear cam shaft seal on a 2.8 12v

I have a 96 A6 that has a leaking valve cover andrear cam shaft seal, both on the passenger side. The valve cover looks straight foward but the rear seal may be more involved. There looks to be a dust cap on the outside. Is the seal behind the cap and is it then carefully pulled out with a seal puller or similar barbed screwdriver (modified)? Then I'm guessing the new sealis carefully tapped in. I also have a suction pump that I will be changing out at the same time. Thanks

The dust cap is the seal. Chances are the cam adjuster seal is also leaking.

The seal the dealer sold me was the traditional looking rubber coated metal with the rubber lip and tension spring. is that the cam adjuster seal?

Nope, I can't think of anything that has a spring on it. The cam adjuster seal is a half moon shaped seal & a sickle shape seal.

I think they gave you the front cam seals, those are located directly behind the cam sprockets and are pressed into the head, those hardly ever leak too. Take the seal back and get the right one.
