Default sluggish symtoms

my 1.8 a3 1998 is very temperamental. sometimes its fine other times its disgustingly slow. ive got high petrol consumtion, sometimes almost a quarter of a tank for about 30 miles (when attempting to drive fast), again other times its fine. The thought is its the MAF, im no good with cars so correct me if im sounding stupid.

3/5 times when reseting my car's computer, it works fine again. the car is particularly bad when the roads are salted.

ive had it in at some rubbish electronics diagnosers, they said it was the maf. but im pretty sure its just because i disconected it without properly reseting my computer, when attempting to fix it myself.

how easy are the sensors to clean?
if it sounds like a diffeerent problem please let me know.
if worse comes to worse i will have to take it to an audi specialist, but im looking for cheaper alternatives first, as im on a tight budget.

Remove your air filter there is a small screen in the lower half of the air box. Make sure its not clogged. If it is clean it out!!!!! If not I would replace the air flow sensor. Seen many of them fail causing al sorts of driveability issues. Sometimes they set codes & other times not.
