Default Tech articles on turbos

I'm really wanting to start learning about turbos on a4's. If anybody has anything on the various types of turbos and the mods needed to go along with the turbo, such as websites and articles or any wisdom anybody would like to share, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks. Ps- Im still learning this forum and the best places to look for information.

There are a number of turbo conversions and replacements Audi Enthusiasts go with for more power.

Our A4's run a K03 turbo in stock form. A popular choice for a turbo upgrade is usually the K04 - which is stock in the Audi TT 225hp. You will notice a significant power increase after a turbo upgrade, but it is NOT easy to do. The 1.8T engine is amazing and really is a great little engine. With different turbos, performance chips, and software programming, some people have milked 300+ hp out of this engine.

One of the most popular aftermarket turbos is definitely Garrett. They make high performance turbo kits and upgrades that work well on our cars. A number of people have installed the GT28R or GT28RS turbo on their Audi for more performance.

You can check out the links page for a bunch of aftermarket websites that produce parts for our cars.

I'm still pretty new to all of this too and am still learning but i hope this helped. I'm sure you'll get bentframe, TomRitt, Panda and Jestnomen to fill you in even more .

the most common turbo upgrade, and probably the least expensive and most reliable, is the K04 turbo. it has better programming available (something that needs to be done with every turbo upgrade), and also has just as much torque as the bigger gt series turbos from garrett. the gt turbos also have more turbo lag, so off the line the k04 will be faster. but up top, above about 4k rpms, the gt owns. there's also the t3/t4 turbo, but i don't know much about that, and i think programming for that is even harder to get than for the GTs. with any turbo upgrade it's a good idea to get an FMIC (or if you're a savage like tom, you make your own), downpipe, testpipe, exhaust, injectors, and fuel pump. with the GT turbos there's a lot more you need to get, here's a very extensive writeup by tomritt on the GT28RS turbo...hope this helps....
