Too high voltage - Audi A6, 2001

Hi,

I am having a problem with a recently bought Audi A6.

1. Year of car - 2001
2. Model of car - A6
3. What engine & TIP or 6sp - 1.8 Turbo 6-Speed Automatic
4. Miles - 260 000 km
5. FWD or Quattro - FWD
6. Any CELs or stored codes -??

The voltmeter on the car is not around 14 volts as I think it is supposed to be. Instead it is all the way at max, and even beyond that. 16 volts +. After driving a little while the warning light for the enigine electronics came on.

I tried using another car battery, which made the warning light go away, but the voltmeter still said 16 volts+. I guess if I keep driving it will come back on, so I am not driving the car now.

Has anyone had the same problem? Could it be the alternator, or perhaps the voltage regulator?

I am ordering a "OBD II VW AUDI Auto Scanner OBD 2 Auto Code Reader G" from eBay to see if it'll help me somehow.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

I'm guessing voltage regulator. the voltage regulator is a part of the alternator. if you take the alternator out you can probably have it rebuilt for a reasonable price. good luck

Thank you for helping out! :)

Isn't it weird that the warning light for the alternator doesn't come on, if that's where the problem is?

Anyways, I will post an update on the situation when I get the diagnostic tool!

I have measured the voltage when the car is running and when it isn't. It is exactly the same as on a different car I measured. Which probably means it's only the voltmeter on the car that shows wrong voltage.

Does anyone know how to calibrate the voltmeter on the car? Where is the sensor?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I don't really understand your reply... Can you explain it a bit?

The codes I got were:

16804 - P0420 Catalyst System: Bank 1: Efficiency Below Threshold

18010 P1602 Power Supply (B+) Terminal 30 Low Voltage

17887-35-10 P1479-35-10 Brake boost Vacuum system mechanical failure.

I erased the codes and took the car for a drive.

Only one of them came back on.

16804 - P0420 Catalyst System: Bank 1: Efficiency Below Threshold

Which doesn't seem to have anything to do with the voltage...

Any ideas?

P0420

intake problem (leak downstream from the MAF/MAF problem)
exhaust leak
02 sensor issue
bad cat (unlikely)

good luck

Hello all nice people,

Any idea what is the part number for the voltage regulator? Audi model same as Stamso's, year 2003 A6, 1.8T.

Hi All,

My Audi A6 has done 180,000 km now, should I change the timing belt now? It was changed once at 80,oookm. Why can't the genuines around build cars that do not require timing belt change?

Hi. I have a 2002 a6 c5 2.0 petrol that has an issue with the keys not syncing with the car both keys have new batteries. Also an issue with voltmeter reading past 16v but battery and alternator tested and ok. Water temp gauge also sits at 110 degrees sometimes 120 but when cold and ignition turned on, its already at around 60-80 degrees. what is the cause of this? cheers
