Hi folks,

New to this so would appreciate some help! I'm currently in the process of buying a second hand Audi A4 Avant 2010. The car is in good condition and has 70k miles and a diesel engine. It is from a reputable large-scale dealer who have serviced the car and during which they noticed that 2nd gear was a bit stiff to get in. I didn't notice this in the test drive however. The mechanic for the dealer has suggested it could be the 2nd gear synchromesh. They have now taken the car to a gearbox specialist to change the synchromesh in 2nd at a cost of £1k to the dealer as they have said they wouldn't sell it to me without fixing it. The dealer suggested it wasn't a major issue and the syncro hasn't gone but they want to fix it in case it does go down the line.

I'm wondering if this is a serious issue and if I should pass on the car and go for something else or if these things can be fixed and remain viable for the long term given routine services are carried out!?

I would appreciate any help asap before I go ahead with the purchase!

Once it's fixed, it should last quite a while. Someone has probably missed a shift a few times and messed up the synchro. They are usually made of brass and area softer than the actual gear. The softer brass can be damaged fairly easily by someone who can't drive a manual and ends up grinding the gears... For some reason 2nd gear is the one that gets the most abuse.
