Default v8 brake pedal leakdown

Hello all. Hope this is the right place to put this thread. I've a problem with my audis brakes. When I apply them, they're very soft, down to about half pedal. There they firm up for about half a second, before leaking down to the floor. I pumped the brakes and checked for fluid on the floor. None. I'm thinking its the master cylinder, my father thinks it might be the proportioning valve. Not sure where to go from here. I don't have money to throw parts at it, especially seeing how expensive things are for this. Any insight/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Zac
