Can anyone tell me where the water temp sensor is located please. It's on a 54 plate Audi TT 225bhp

Look for a coolant pipe at the rear of the engine (drivers side if the engine is transverse mounted). The sensors are usually fitted into a socket in the pipe and held in with a plastic clip for easy removal. Be careful removing the clip as they can be brittle. I'd order a new clip with the sensor while I was at it. It should look something like this..
